When importing gas cylinders from China, the shipping arrangement depends heavily on whether the cylinders are empty, fitted with valves, or already filled with gas.
For international buyers, understanding these differences before placing an order can help avoid unnecessary freight costs, customs issues, booking delays, and even rejected shipments.
This article explains the main shipping options for empty and filled gas cylinders from China, using CO₂ cylinders as a typical example.

For samples and small quantities, international buyers often consider air freight or courier services such as FedEx, DHL, or UPS.
For air or express shipments, empty cylinders and valves need to be packed and shipped separately.
Even if there is no compressed gas inside the cylinder, shipping a cylinder with the valve already assembled can create difficulties with airline or courier acceptance.
The usual arrangement is therefore:
· Empty cylinders packed separately
· Valves packed separately
· Valve installation completed after arrival
This is generally the most practical arrangement for samples and small-quantity shipments.
Sea freight is more flexible for commercial quantities.
If the cylinders are completely empty, they can generally be shipped by sea as non-dangerous general cargo. For sea freight, the valves can also be installed on the cylinders before shipment, provided that there is no compressed gas inside.
This allows buyers to receive cylinders with the valves already assembled, reducing assembly work after arrival.
Depending on the quantity, empty cylinders can usually be shipped by:
· LCL (Less than Container Load) for smaller quantities
· FCL (Full Container Load) for larger orders
Compared with filled cylinders, the shipping process for empty cylinders is considerably simpler.
Once a cylinder is filled with gas, the transportation requirements change significantly.
Taking CO₂ as an example, filled CO₂ cylinders are classified as Class 2 dangerous goods for transportation. This means the shipment requires dangerous-goods booking, documentation, declaration, handling, and carrier approval.
For commercial shipments of filled CO₂ cylinders from China, FCL shipment is generally recommended.
A full-container shipment usually provides a more practical and predictable solution for this type of dangerous goods.
Although dangerous-goods LCL services exist on some routes, arranging LCL shipping for filled CO₂ cylinders can be difficult in practice.
One of the main reasons is that not every consolidator or shipping line accepts Class 2 dangerous goods.
Available routes and sailing schedules can therefore be limited.
DG LCL shipments also involve additional charges for items such as:
· Dangerous-goods handling
· DG documentation and declaration
· Warehouse handling
· Consolidation
· Special operational charges
As a result, the total cost of DG LCL can be surprisingly high. In many cases, the total cost may already be close to the cost of a full container.
For this reason, buyers planning to import filled CO₂ cylinders should compare the practical cost and availability of DG LCL and FCL before deciding the final order quantity.
Exporting filled CO₂ cylinders from China involves more than simply arranging dangerous-goods transportation.
Applicable filled gas-cylinder shipments also need to complete the required China Customs inspection and export procedures before shipment.
Depending on the product and shipment, the exporter or its agent may need to prepare documents such as:
· Export hazardous-goods or hazardous-chemical declaration documents
· Manufacturer's declaration of conformity
· Dangerous characteristics classification and identification report
· Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
· Dangerous-goods labels and markings
· Relevant packaging inspection or appraisal documents
· Commercial and export declaration documents
Customs may verify whether the actual goods are consistent with the declared cargo description, dangerous characteristics, SDS, labels, packaging, and other documentation.
For this reason, these requirements should be checked before the goods are completed and before the final vessel booking is arranged.
It is also important for buyers to understand that China Customs inspection and the shipping line's dangerous-goods booking are separate procedures.
Completing the customs-related requirements does not automatically mean that the shipping line will approve the DG booking, and vice versa.
Proper coordination between the manufacturer, exporter, freight forwarder, and shipping line is therefore important.
The freight forwarder plays a particularly important role when shipping filled gas cylinders.
Dangerous-goods bookings require the cargo classification, documentation, declaration information, labels, packaging details, and carrier application to be prepared correctly.
Many general freight forwarders in China mainly handle ordinary cargo and may have limited experience with gas cylinders and Class 2 dangerous goods.
An inexperienced forwarder may cause problems such as:
· Incorrect or incomplete DG booking applications
· Repeated document revisions
· Delayed shipping-line approval
· Missed vessel schedules
· Booking rejection by the shipping line
For dangerous-goods shipments, choosing a forwarder only because they offer the lowest freight rate can therefore create additional risks.
Experience with Class 2 cargo and gas-cylinder exports is often much more important.
